What started as simply a travel-related activity has become a life-long passion. Being an amateur Highland Games athlete and a strongman competitor has allowed me to travel extensively.
And so, for the last thirty years, driven by the desire to explore and discover, I have been able to create a composite of the many regional landscapes that create a patchwork of Americana.
Constructing this patchwork has entailed walking the paths of such masters as Ansel Adams and the Westons, in the hopes of encountering what they have been able to capture of the pristine coastlines of the Pacific Northwest.
However, I have also sought to piece together and map out how human activity interfaces with these landscapes to create the industrial power of the Midwest as well as the casting off of old appliances left to perish in the Mojave Desert.
Juxtaposition of images, along with use of black & white film and digital capture that allows for emphasis on contrast and shadow, provides a view that raises questions of what we value and how that changes through time. Moving between old and new, nature and technology, what is to be appreciated and preserved versus what is to be left behind are all choices that become part of that ever growing patchwork of complexities.
